3 potential cap casualties the Bengals need to sign for 2022
1. Landon Collins
The former Giant turned Washington footballer, Landon Collins would be an interesting cap cut. The Commanders would save $6.6 million if he’s released before June 1.
Collins had injury issues in 2020, playing in just seven games. 2021 saw him play 13 games, though he was very productive when he played. The problem is if Washington were to cut Collins, it would likely be post-June 1 where the Commanders could save over $12 million in cap money.
The question is, will the Bengals spend all of their money before June 1? History suggests Cincinnati likes to lay in the weeds and wait for players they can get at a relative discount, and Collins could be that type of player.
If they were to pursue a player like Landon Collins, providing his Achilles is sufficiently healed, they would have yet another moveable piece to fit Lou Anarumo’s hybrid scheme. Collins can play safety, some corner, and can come down in the box and play the run. The more versatility on defense, the better.
Once again, while not a player that the team would have to heavily lean on, especially with the emergence of Germaine Pratt and Logan Wilson and an already deep secondary, a cap friendly deal for a player with Collins’ versatility and experience could further bolster a defense that could be a top five unit in 2022.
These are three potential cap cuts that could come in for 2022 and make a splash as the team (hopefully) makes another Super Bowl run. As they always say, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.
