Youth

Older folks such as myself like to spout platitudes like “youth is wasted on the young”. While I firmly believe that to be true, youth definitely WON’T be wasted on the Bengal defense.

Every projected starter for 2022 is under 30 years old. Cincinnati as a team is one of the youngest in the league, with the oldest starters on defense being D.J. Reader and Trey Hendrickson, both 27.

Even guys who seem like they have been in the league forever like Eli Apple (26) and Mike Hilton (28) are still young and in their prime.

A lot can be said for grizzled, veteran savvy, but over the course of a 17-game season, it’s equally important to have young legs. When you can mesh the youth with experience you could have the recipe for something special.

The Bengals have numerous players on their second contract, but young enough to still be key contributors. The experience brought by players like Chidobie Awuzie, Mike Hilton, DJ Reader, and Vonn Bell is priceless.

What we should see in 2022 is a defense experienced enough to know what to do, young enough to still be able to do it, and hungry enough to push into the top ten and take this Bengal team deep into the playoffs once again.
