Week 9 vs. Panthers

Marvin Lewis was the head coach of the Bengals the last time these two teams met up. Just three years later, Zac Taylor’s Bengals became Super Bowl runner-ups, and Matt Rhule’s Panthers went 5-12 last season. This has all the makings of a trap game, so the Bengals must enter with caution.

The real question will be if quarterback Sam Darnold still leads the Panthers in week 6, or will they go with rookie Matt Corral? Regardless, the Bengals have the better defense and the home-field advantage.

The Panthers, like the Bengals, spent their offseason beefing up the offensive line. Coach Rhule picked up new rookie left tackle Ikem Ekwonu, considered one of the best tackles in this year’s draft; however, he will be tested by Bengals sack machine Trey Hendrickson. This clash could most certainly have an impact on the game.

In this game, the Panthers hope to rely on their all-pro running back, Christian McCaffrey but unfortunately for Carolina, he has a history of being injured. He only played in seven games last season and just 10 games in the previous two seasons.

The Panthers signed D’Onta Foreman in free agency to help McCaffrey. When Foreman played for the Titans last year, he broke off some nice runs on the Bengals during their playoff game so containing these two will be a priority.

A win would carry the momentum into their BYE week and allow the team to focus on the more challenging second part of the season.
