Bengals Roster: Realistic expectations for Tyler Boyd in 2022
Tyler Boyd is entering his seventh year on the Cincinnati Bengals roster. What should fans expect from him in 2022?
In the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals selected Tyler Boyd out of Pittsburgh. By his third year in the league, Boyd had emerged as a threat offensively, tallying 1,028 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2018 season.
He followed that up with another stellar season in 2019, with 1,046 yards and five touchdowns, proving that he was a reliable offensive weapon for the Bengals.
The Bengals drafted Tee Higgins in 2020 to pair with Boyd and this past year, they drafted Ja’Marr Chase. That’s led to Boyd’s role becoming smaller with the addition of those two receivers but he still put together solid seasons in 2020 and 2021.
Bengals Roster: What should fans expect from Tyler Boyd in 2022?
With Chase coming off a season for the ages and Higgins also putting together a 1,000-yard campaign, Boyd’s role is probably going to continue to be the WR3 in the offense. He would be a WR1 or WR2 in any other offense but that’s how loaded Cincinnati is on that side of the ball.
Last year, Boyd went for 67 receptions for 828 yards and five touchdowns despite having all of those other weapons to compete with. There were a few games where Boyd was practically invisible and in the end, that’s what cost him from joining his two teammates in going over 1,000 yards receiving for the third time in his career.
Fans can probably expect similar numbers from Boyd again this year assuming he stays healthy. If Chase or Higgins miss an extended period of time, Boyd might be able to put up better numbers than he did a season ago.
Boyd and Joe Burrow have established chemistry during their two years together but with so many weapons in the Queen City, it’s hard for Boyd to truly stand out as he once did. Hopefully, he can continue to be a difference-maker for this team and we’ll see him have several big games in 2022.
