Bengals Free Agency: Eddie Goldman could be worth taking a chance on
Bengals free agency has gone smoothly so far but the team shouldn’t call it quits just yet. Eddie Goldman is someone the Cincinnati Bengals should look to bring in.
With training camp just around the corner, the Cincinnati Bengals should continue to look into boosting their defensive line. Eddie Goldman is a name that could make some sense for them.
Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus listed one trade or free agent that each NFL team should make before training camp begins and for the Bengals — You guessed it — he said they should sign Goldman.
Kyed offered this analysis:
"The Bengals lost defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi in free agency, and they only replenished the position by drafting Florida’s Zachary Carter in the third round. Goldman, 28, struggled in 2021 with a 39.8 overall defensive grade after opting out for the 2020 season, but he earned an 83.7 overall defensive grade across the 2018 and 2019 seasons."
Bengals Free Agency: Eddie Goldman should be a target
Losing Larry Ogunjobi wasn’t the end of the world for the team since they were able to keep B.J. Hill in Cincinnati but as Kyed mentions, the only other thing the team did to attempt to keep the defensive line moving in the right direction was drafting Zach Carter in the third round.
Kyed notes that Goldman had a rough go of it in 2021 but he was solid during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. During that time, Goldman totaled 69 tackles and four sacks. He wasn’t a superstar but he provided a solid presence up front for the Bears during that time.
Goldman isn’t the same player he once was but the Bengals wouldn’t sign him to slot him in as a starter. They already have Hill sliding into Ogunjobi’s old role and Carter sitting behind him. Goldman would simply be another depth piece to have on the defensive line and his experience in the league could help some of the younger guys out as well.
This isn’t a move the Bengals need to make by any means but Eddie Goldman could certainly be a nice depth addition to a revamped defensive line.
