4 most underappreciated players in Bengals history
By Eli Zink
2. A.J. Green
A.J. Green helped turn the franchise around with his spectacular skill at the receiver position. Green will always be remembered as one of the best but many fans undervalue what he accomplished in his first seven years with the team.
During those first seven years, he made the Pro Bowl every year and was selected as an All-Pro two of those times. Green made history by being the only other receiver since Randy Moss to make the Bro Bowl in their first seven years in the league. He eclipsed 1,000 yards in his first five seasons while coming up just short in his sixth year due to missing time due to injury.
His sixth year would have arguably been the best in his career if it weren’t for that injury as he only played in 10 of the 16 games and had allotted 964 yards while averaging 96.4 yards per game. He also had a ridiculous 66% catch percentage that year which was and still is the highest he has ever had in his career.
Imagine if Green had a top 10 quarterback during his prime — his numbers would have been way different. Though he may go down as one of the best Bengals ever, there is no doubt that his impact on the field as a player is vastly overlooked and underappreciated.
If Green could have remained healthy in his last few years there would have been no doubt he would be in the Hall of Fame but his body eventually turned on him cutting his dominance short.
