Cincinnati Bengals safety Jordan Battle is...embattled. After a fine season last year in pass coverage, all that goodwill seems to have evaporated early on in 2026.

Part of me wants to give Battle the benefit of the doubt, even as he's allowing a passer rating of 111.4. He has popped up on the injury report with a bad hammy of late. I know for a fact he still struggles to tackle, so if he's not going to be a lockdown center fielder, the appeal of deploying him in the starting lineup diminishes significantly.

Sine the Bengals are so thin at safety and have no clear intention to bench Battle, he should just keep his head down and work. Alas, he did not do that before Week 5's game in Miami.

Battle is writing checks with his mouth that his being can't cash

Jordan Battle needlessly called out Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis for a supposed "tell" of patting the ball before he throws. Shot out Trags for the vid.

The key part of the quote is in the caption prior to the "show more" cutoff. Battle should probably focus on playing better before starts trying to fire verbal warning shots at the opposing QB.

Was Joe Namath a good quarterback? I mean if you look at his raw statistics, no, but he played in a far different era, so chill on that. Joe Willy was the man. He had a cannon arm just like Willis does. And oh my gosh! He tapped the ball before he threw! Take five seconds to see/hear this cutup at the 33-second mark:

Joe Burrow himself, in a video montage of him processing in under 2.5 seconds post-snap, pats the ball before just about every throw.

Point being, what Battle said made the rounds way too much. I was planning to just write about it after the game, when Willis inevitably spam targeted him.

It was a needless controversy for Battle to bring up. The Bengals have the far superior roster to Miami. They are in dire need of a win after back-to-back losses. Facing a 0-4 team, even if the Dolphins are better than that record suggests, is the ultimate get-right game, despite it being on the road.

I just wish Battle hadn't said anything. Willis doesn't strike me as the type of QB you're going to get in the head of. The audacity he had to take on the Dolphins' starting job in the first place in the midst of an impossible rebuild with a no-name supporting cast of wide receivers tells you all you need to know about that.

All eyes will be on Battle in Week 5. He brought a ton of attention on himself with these Willis remarks. And he could've 100% avoided it. The fanbase at large has enough ire pointed at him, to the point where coaches have had to come out and publicly defend Battle.
