Week 1 is finally here, and the Cincinnati Bengals begin their realistic quest for their first Super Bowl with a home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. It should be a fascinating quarterback duel between Joe Burrow and his ex-AFC North peer Baker Mayfield at the very least.
But there are a whole lot of other layers to this matchup. Yes, Baker just got paid the big bucks, but football is the ultimate team sport. A lot of Sunday's outcome depends on how everyone else plays around these magnetic QBs.

Seriously, get your popcorn ready for this one — even if you're a casual NFL fan. Me personally? I mean if I wasn't covering the game professionally, as a football purist, I'd have this Bengals-Bucs tilt for sure on the quad box setup on YouTube TV's NFL Sunday Ticket.
To me that's the best package and visual means to consume the NFL season. Yes, the price tag is hefty, but just think about when you go out to bars. Maybe you get a few drinks, or some food, or both! Cool fun times with friends and all...until you rack up a hefty bill!

As you can see, the Bengals and Bucs had two top receivers apiece banged up. Tampa Bay's Jalen McMillan is doubtful, and that's the biggest lost for either side. Emeka Egbuka will play for the Bucs after practicing fully for three straight days.
No concerns or limitations for Ja'Marr Chase or Tee Higgins. You love to see that for both of them, as Tee has had his fair share of injuries, and Ja'Marr scared the entire fanbase with that hyperextended knee in camp.
Star cornerback DJ Turner took it a bit easier when a hamstring issue popped up on Thursday, yet Bengals head coach Zac Taylor told reporters Turner would be good to go. No designated status for DJ has me confident that's the case.
Storylines to watch for Bengals in Week 1

Links out to those latter two stories for greater detail. As for the first two lines of questioning, Cincinnati's offensive line returning all five starters is a huge deal for both of those.
With the guys in the trenches having that much innate chemistry, it stands to reason they'll take the adjustment to a more under-center offense in stride. Ted Karras is the captain and trigger man of the whole operation. He and Burrow will have everyone on the same page.
Now that a healthy Joe Shiesty should be well protected when he drops back, and should have the best running game he's had in his career, there's no excuse for him not to will Cincinnati to a fast start.
That said, the defense has to hold up their end of the bargain. Dexter Lawrence was dominant in training camp by all accounts. Looks well worth the 10th overall pick. Can't wait to see him play against a live opponent. He should have multiple parties in the Bucs backfield on Sunday.
Final score prediction
We're looking good, Who Dey Heads. I believe Amarius Mims will lock down Bucs first-round pass rusher Rueben Bain Jr. on the edge. Not sure sure about that afore-linked Brown-Diaby situation.
But anyway, as long as DJ's hammy is right, he and Dax Hill should have little trouble locking up whomever Tampa Bay trots out at wide receiver, all due respect to Emeka Egbuka and Chris Godwin.
My main worry is, yes, Kenny Gainwell and Bucky Irving getting loose on screens, checkdowns, mesh railroads, and Texas routes against Bengals linebackers Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter. They' were both horrible in coverage in 2025. Here's praying they've improved.
I suspect it'll take a full half for the tweaked offensive scheme to come together for the Bengals. Their defense may need a couple games to mesh with all the new additions, too.
Nevertheless, in Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins I trust to pull out a tight victory.
