Cincinnati Bengals fans weren't exactly losing sleep over Cordell Volson departing the team in free agency this spring. The fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft had an up and down (mostly down) career with the Bengals so him leaving wasn't looked at as a big deal.
Volson joined the Tennessee Titans during the offseason with the idea in mind that he'd be the favorite to lock down their starting right guard job. He mostly played left guard during his time in Cincinnati so it was going to be a new task for the North Dakota State product but one that he was the frontrunner for.
Well, that hope took a massive hit after the first week of preseason action. Titans fans got to see Volson on the gridiron for the first time as a member of their squad and it didn't go well.
Cordell Volson is proving Bengals fans right in Tennessee
Justin Melo of Titan Sized, FanSided's Tennessee Titans site, is already seeing the writing on the wall when it comes to Volson. Not only did the former Bengals starter look completely lost when he was on the gridiron but he didn't even get the start at right guard for his new team. To make matters worse for Volson, a rookie swiped the starting job away from him.
"It was Carmona who received the start at right guard versus the 49ers," Melo wrote. "After Carmona took advantage of his opportunity, he was replaced by Volson with the second stringers. Volson struggled both in pass protection and as a run blocker. Pro Football Focus credited him with allowing one sack en route to a lackluster pass-blocking score of 58.6. Volson also occasionally got pushed into the backfield in the run game."
That's a whole lot of yikes right there for Volson. A fresh start in Nashville has gone south in a hurry and it's entirely possible that Volson doesn't even end up making the final roster for the Titans. Melo said it best when he said "Volson is already trending in the wrong direction." Wrong direction indeed.
Bengals fans aren't surprised to see things panning out this way considering how rocky Volson's tenure was in Cincinnati. To see the former Bengals starter not even get the first preseason start, however, could be a rough sign of things to come for Volson.
Is this the end of the road for Cordell Volson's NFL career? We'll have to wait and see how everything plays out. It's not looking good though.
