Zac Taylor's one-word answer signals Bengals' radical change on defense

The Cincinnati Bengals will take any modicum of improvement they can get on defense this year. Such a gridiron phenomenon would be a sight for head coach Zac Taylor's sore eyes, which have beheld utter incompetence (and defensive incontinence if you're nasty) over the last three seasons of playoff-free football.

Taylor is as on the hot seat as any head coach with an elite quarterback like Joe Burrow is. However, he has a defensive coordinator in Al Golden who's actually cooking with gas this year thanks to versatile, dynamic players like Boye Mafe and superstars like Dexter Lawrence.

But physical tools only go so far. At the NFL level, it's more about the mental fortitude to grind through pain, and to execute the most sophisticated schematics amid fatigue and immense pressure.

Sounds like this 2026 Bengals defense is positioned to make a huge leap forward.

Taylor praises the high football IQ of Bengals' new-look defensive line

During a press conference in which he praised the Year 2 improvement already shown by maligned linebackers Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter, Zac Taylor summed up why that pair is better situated to succeed. It's not just their personal progress. It's the collective, savvy unit around them:

The defensive line has been whipping the Cincinnati offensive line by all accounts at training camp thus far. Some of that is to do with the Bengals going with a more under-center offense and adjusting to playbook tweaks. Much of it is due to newcomers like Lawrence, Mafe, and Jonathan Allen in the trenches wreaking absolute havoc.

It's somewhat underrated how fast d-linemen in the NFL have to read and react to plays. They're the literal first line of defense. You better know your gap responsibilities, how to place your hands, and how to play with the proper pad level, or else you'll be yeeted out of the play in a hurry.

When Carter and Knight made good plays earlier in camp, to underscore the welcome contrast to 2025's tire fire on defense, I had to invoke Toy Story legend Buzz Lightyear's quote, "There seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere."

Hilarious to me that Taylor used that word to describe the revamped defensive line. And interesting in the same presser how he implied they made the jobs of Carter and Knight easier.

Yo Zac, you read a lil' Stripe Hype in your off time? Just kidding. Taylor deliberately insulates himself from all the Internet chatter. I would too — unless my scouting department, ownership, and powers that be were sabotaging my team at every turn. Which, make no mistake, the Bengals were making Taylor coach with one arm tied behind his back so to speak for the last few years.

Then, this offseason happened. It was almost as if Taylor was eager to get that "intelligent" word off his chest.

Not to imply last year's crew was dumb, but relative to the rest of the NFL, let's be real, Cincinnati's performance was stupid-bad. They ranked dead-last in run defense, and 26th in pass defense despite a slew of awful opposing QBs to end the year.

Taylor has held up his end of the bargain over the years. Has he had some mismanaged moments? Yes, but all head coaches do. The offense still hummed without Burrow in 2023 when Jake Browning was thrust into duty. Then, Taylor got Joe Flacco up to speed this past season to keep the Bengals more competitive than they had any right to be with that abomination of a defense.

Anyway, it's good to know how confident Taylor is in this group, which also features rookie second-round defensive end Cashius Howell, and past first-round picks in Myles Murphy and Shemar Stewart on the edge.

Once Stewart and stalwart defensive tackle B.J. Hill return form their respective injuries, this group could go from a perpetual liability to a full-blown strength. That just might be the difference that catapults the Bengals back into the playoffs and the Super Bowl conversation.
