Bengals Would Need Help if Adam Jones Were Suspended

According to multiple news sources including WCPO in Cincinnati, earlier this week, Adam “Pacman” Jones had yet another run-in with the law; however, no arrest was made.

As TMZ reported, Jones was acting disorderly at Indiana’s Hollywood Casino. Jones claimed that he was chewing tobacco and they had asked him to leave. Regardless of which story is true, the police we called to the casino.

Other reports indicated that Jones is a regular at the casino and is, “a pain in the management’s ”.

The question is, considering Adam Jones’ checkered past, if this event holds any merit against Jones, what could be the penalty? It is no secret that Jones has had rather frequent run-ins with authority. With that in mind, it would be just another tally on a long rap sheet for Mr. Jones.  Assuming that Jones did enough to warrant a police call, the Cincinnati Bengals may be forced to find another cornerback, even if it is just for a game or two.

While he has been one of the better corners that Cincinnati has had over the last several year, Leon Hall is becoming increasingly injury prone. So much so that he has been the subject of speculation that suggests his  release due to his cap number. If anything were to happen with Jones, the Bengals would be hard-pressed to release Hall.

Terence Newman is aging. There is no getting around that fact. Newman may not have much time left being 37 this September. On top of that, if his play in the final two games of the 2014 season were any indication of his future, his career may be coming to a quick and abrupt end.

Dre Kirkpatrick, for the most part, is still an unknown to Who Dey Nation. He had his best performance of his young career against Denver in Week 16. Intercepting Peyton Manning twice in the same game is quite an accomplishment; however, outside of that game, his play has been inconsistent. So much so that he carried the “bust” label up until late last season.

Darqueze Dennard was the team’s first round pick last season, but saw limited playing time despite being a high selection. He had some success on special teams, but beyond that, he is still an unknown.

Jones has been a solid nickleback for Cincinnati ever since his arrival in 2010. He has displayed fantastic return skills and consistency on defense. He is a good open field tackler, so losing him would be highly detrimental.

The fact that no arrest was made and that news on the matter has been quiet for a day or two would indicate that nothing will happen to Jones. If something were to happen, Cincinnati would likely elevate Chris Lewis-Harris from the practice squad.

Coupling a suspension with the ever-possible injury to a defensive back means Cincinnati could be in the market for another corner soon. There has already been speculation of Cincinnati taking another defensive back later in this year’s draft. A suspension of Jones would only escalate those talks.

Here is a video released by TMZ showing, at least, in part what transpired between Adam Jones, the casino, and the police.
