Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman, Devon Still, has been by his daughter’s side ever since finding out that Leah had pediatric cancer. The whole NFL nation has been inspired by Leah’s fight and determination to beat cancer. This weekend it was announced that she had some complications with a stem cell transplant. Now, according to USA Today’s Nina Mandell, Devon and Leah will be honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at this year’s ESPY Awards.

The Still family found out about Leah’s cancer almost one year ago and since then she has been in and out of Philadelphia’s Children’s Hospital for treatment and surgery. Before last season, the Bengals had signed the defensive tackle to the practice squad to allow him to keep his NFL insurance plan, and then promoted him once he was ready to rejoin the team. Leah had also attended and was honored at half time of the Bengals’ Thursday Night Football game against the Browns.
The Jimmy V Perseverance Award was won last year by Stuart Scott, the ESPN sportscaster who just passed this January from cancer. Leah and Devon are the ninth recipients of the award, which recognizes the will to never give up. The ESPY Awards are scheduled for July 15th on ABC.
The NFL and Bengals have been active in bringing cancer awareness to the public by supporting the fight against breast cancer, by donating proceeds from Devon Still’s jersey sales to cancer research, and when the Bengals donated money based on a per sack basis last year. The Bengals have a new campaign for any Bengals fan suffering from cancer now. They want to feature one fan in a commercial in hopes of raising awareness for cancer research and prevention.
