Round 7: Pick 227, Cameron Johnston P Ohio State
Wait… what? New kicker and a new punter? Time to face the reality that this is a possibility. I am a Kevin Huber fan and always have been. But, he has struggled recently with hang time on his punts. He went from an All-Star punter to a barely usable guy in a couple of years.
Johnston becomes the next punter to come from a local college. The Bengals have done their due diligence on the Aussie style punter, and are looking for an upgrade. Johnston can be that guy.
Round 7: Pick 251, Josh Thornton CB Southern Utah
The Bengals were already showing interest in Thornton. Then, they brought him in for another visit. Clearly, they like what they see in him for a depth piece/ practice squad player.
The team may decide that instead of worrying that another squad may draft him, they can spend a 7th rounder on the small school corner. If he’s not selected, look for Thornton to wind up in Cincy as a priority undrafted free agent.
This year there is plenty to debate about whether the team needs offensive or defensive help first. I for one am on board with restocking the offensive firepower this year. The defense came along at the end of the season, and swapping Kevin Minter for Rey Maualuga will only help. The offense needs an input of young talent at almost every position.
Let’s buckle in Who Dey fans, it’s draft week!
